Velocity Training for the High School Offseason: What Actually Works (And What Doesn’t)

Velocity Training for the High School Offseason: What Actually Works (And What Doesn’t)

Every pitcher wants to throw harder. But not every pitcher knows how to do it safely, efficiently, and with lasting results.

As a coach who’s helped pitchers gain 5–10+ MPH while reducing injury risk, I’ve seen firsthand what separates real development from hype. So if you're a high school pitcher—or a parent of one—this offseason is your golden window.

Let’s break down what works, what doesn’t, and how to approach velocity training the smart way.

❌ What Doesn’t Work

  1. Random Weighted Ball Routines

    • Copying a pro’s program from Instagram? Bad move.

    • Without assessment, overload/underload training can harm arm health or mechanics.

  2. Lifting Like a Bodybuilder

    • Bench press isn’t the answer.

    • Pitchers need rotational strength, power output, and mobility—not hypertrophy.

  3. No Speed Work

    • Pitching is explosive. If you aren’t training to move fast, your velo gains will plateau.

    • Sprint work, med ball throws, and jump metrics matter.

  4. No Progression or Periodization

    • You don’t build 90 MPH overnight.

    • You need a structured ramp-up with clear testing and rest built in.

✅ What Does Work

  1. Assessment-Based Planning

    • Mobility, arm health, movement patterns—start here.

    • We use ArmCare, PitchLogic, and biomechanical tools to guide each plan.

  2. Velocity-Based Training (VBT)

    • When available, tracking bar speed, jump height, and sprint times adds precision to your training.

    • It helps athletes train for power output, not just weight or volume.

  3. Speed + Strength Integration

    • A complete program shouldn’t just focus on one.

    • Pitchers need a blend of strength and speed—combining overload and underload training to build both force and explosiveness.

  4. Intelligent Throwing Progressions

    • From constraint drills to plyo balls to flat grounds—every throw has a purpose.

    • Recovery is tracked and optimized through ArmCare.Com, MarcPro, and Compex

๐Ÿ“ˆ Real Results

In our last velocity cycle, athletes gained:

  • +3.5 MPH avg over 8 weeks

  • Improved jump distance and sprint speed

  • Better movement efficiency and control

And most importantly—zero arm issues.

๐Ÿ’ช Gabriel Cordova: A Testament to Patience, Preparation, and Power

๐Ÿ’ช Gabriel Cordova: A Testament to Patience, Preparation, and Power

In an era where players rush to get exposure, Gabriel Cordova took the road less traveled — and it’s paying off.

When I first began working with Gabriel, he was at a crossroads. Rather than jumping prematurely into showcases or travel ball, he made a bold choice: to step away from competition for an entire year and focus on building the foundation that truly matters — strength, skill, and game readiness.

๐Ÿ“ˆ A 50-Pound Transformation Backed by ArmCare

Gabriel didn’t just hit the gym — he committed to a fully customized strength and throwing program built around the ArmCare platform.

Through daily monitoring of his shoulder strength, fatigue levels, and recovery metrics, we were able to precisely adjust his training volume and throwing workload. This data-driven approach allowed us to ramp up intensity when his body was ready and scale back when needed, maximizing gains while minimizing risk.

Over the course of a year, this strategy resulted in over 50 pounds of throwing-specific strength — a transformation that not only boosted his velocity potential but dramatically improved his durability and confidence on the mound.

This wasn’t guesswork. It was precision development.

๐Ÿง  Learning the Game Inside and Out

During his development year, Gabriel also dedicated himself to mastering the mental side of baseball — especially on the defensive side of the game. We focused on:

  • Defensive positioning based on hitter tendencies and game situations

  • Reading swings to anticipate batted ball direction and timing

  • Understanding situational defense, such as bunt coverages, double play depth, and where to be on specific counts

  • Predicting opponent strategy — understanding when teams are likely to steal, bunt, or hit-and-run, and adjusting accordingly

This gave Gabriel the edge to not only play hard — but play smart. He now steps onto the field with a clear understanding of what’s likely to happen next and how to be in the right spot before the play develops.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Ready to Be Seen

After a year of intense behind-the-scenes work, Gabriel entered a handful of workouts and showcases — but this time with total confidence in his preparation and process. He didn’t just participate — he stood out, head and shoulders above the rest of the competition.

That level of readiness and poise didn’t go unnoticed.

Gabriel earned not only an invite to Clarke University’s fall workout, but ultimately received an athletic scholarshipoffer as a result of his performance and presence. It was validation for the year of focused development and a reminder that when you prepare the right way, opportunity finds you.

๐Ÿ“š Working Outside the Field

Gabriel’s commitment didn’t stop when he left the training facility.

He also placed a strong emphasis on his academics, holding himself to a high standard in the classroom. His discipline, time management, and attention to detail carried over into his schoolwork — putting him in a position to not only receive an athletic scholarship, but also secure academic scholarship money from Clarke University.

By excelling both on the field and in the classroom, Gabriel showed what it means to be a complete student-athlete — and opened up even more opportunities for his future.

๐ŸŽฏ Final Thoughts

Most players and parents today place too much emphasis on playing more games and attending more showcases — often leading to overexposure without the performance to back it up.

Here’s the reality: if you can’t pass the eye test or meet the standards that a college program is looking for, no amount of exposure will help. You’ll simply blend in, or worse — be labeled as not ready.

Before showcasing, you need to honestly evaluate where you stand compared to your peers. If you're not clearly standing out, then it’s not time to showcase — it’s time to train.

The right move is to get on a customized training plan that focuses on your long-term development, just like Gabriel did.

The Pitching Development Pyramid: What Most Players Get Wrong About Development

Everyone wants velocity, but very few understand the order of operations it takes to earn it. Think of development like a pyramid — if you stack skills out of order, the whole thing collapses. At URATBB, we follow a simple but powerful structure to build complete, durable, high-performing pitchers: The Pitching Pyramid.

The Pyramid Layers (Bottom to Top)

  1. Functional Training & Movement Patterns
This is the foundation. If you don’t move well, you can’t throw well — period. We begin with functional movement training and mechanical patterning to establish stability, mobility, and coordination. We use tools like ArmCare.com to assess how the body moves and identify limitations that could affect mechanics, recovery, or performance. This level isn’t flashy — but it’s the reason everything else works.

  2. Movement Proficiency
Once the foundation is in place, we start refining how athletes move through their delivery. This is where movement patterns become efficient, repeatable, and athletic. Consistency in movement equals consistency in results. This layer builds trust in your mechanics and allows pitchers to begin throwing with more intent and less compensation.  This is where we start to adjust your biomechanics.

  3. Game Understanding
With consistent movement in place, we can begin teaching Baseball IQ. This includes situational awareness, pitch selection, understanding hitter tendencies, and reading the game. Players at this level are no longer just throwers — they’re developing into pitchers who can think and compete at a higher level.

  4. Velocity Development
Once we’ve taken care of the foundation, then — and only then — do we chase horsepower. Velocity work includes strength training, sprint-based conditioning, med ball throws, and high-output velocity days. Most players want to start here, but skipping the first three layers almost always leads to injury, inconsistency, and plateaus.

  5. Pitch Shapes & Stuff
At the top of the pyramid is pitch design — breaking balls, fastball ride, tunneling, and sequencing. This level can overlap with velocity work depending on where an athlete is in their development. But let’s be clear: if you don’t throw hard enough, it doesn’t matter how good your stuff is. Greg Maddux is often used as an example of “command over velo,” but early in his career he was throwing in the upper 90s. Stuff matters. Velocity matters. And together, they’re lethal.  We like to use PitchLogic for this phase as its important in tracking the improvement and changes in how your stuff is working.

Why Most Players Get It Backwards

Too many players try to jump into velocity or pitch shaping before they can repeat their mechanics or compete mentally. They mimic the training of MLB arms — not realizing that those arms were built over years of structured development. When you skip steps, you get stuck. Or worse — you get hurt.

How URATBB Builds Pitchers Differently

We assess every athlete and guide them through the pyramid one step at a time. We don’t guess. We test, measure, and adapt using tools like ArmCare and personalized development plans. Our goal isn’t just to make you throw harder — it’s to build you into a complete, durable, dominant pitcher who thrives at the next level.

Conclusion

Not everyone is at the same place on the development pyramid. That’s okay — the key is knowing where you are and what comes next. You may even need to combine a few steps if you're getting started later in the journey.  Once you understand your position, you can structure your training, practices, and mindset to climb one level at a time. And when the foundation is strong, the results last.

Summer Gains: Why This Is the Most Crucial Season for Pitchers

Summer isn’t just a break from school — it’s a golden opportunity for pitchers to separate themselves from the competition. While others are chasing travel ball trophies, the smartest players are using this time to build velocity, refine mechanics, improve mobility, and elevate their game.

The season doesn’t reward the most talented. It rewards the most prepared.

Less Chaos, More Control

During the school year, pitchers are buried under games, practices, homework, and limited recovery. In summer, we finally gain control. We can structure strength blocks, set aggressive velocity goals, test arm metrics, and install mechanical changes with time to reinforce them.

This window of focused work — without the pressure of weekly outings — is where true development happens.

Build Before You Showcase

Too many players rush to be seen before they’re ready. Instead, summer should be used to:

  • Increase pitch shapes

  • Improve arm health and recovery habits

  • Refine movement patterns / increase velocity

  • Add lean mass and lower body explosiveness

Then, when fall showcases and tryouts hit, the results speak for themselves.

Stacking Progress with Intention

At URATBB, our summer plans include:

  • Focused activation and prep work

  • ArmCare.com daily arm readiness testing

  • Throwing drills designed for velocity and command

  • Periodized deloads and ramp-ups

Our athletes train smarter and harder — because they aren’t guessing. We use real metrics to track gains and adjust workloads.

Real Results from Real Work

We’ve seen athletes like Trevor, Jack, Kylan, and Brody make their biggest leaps during summer. Gains of 5–10 MPH, better strike percentages, stronger recovery windows — all because they committed to working while others were just playing.

Summer isn’t the offseason — it’s the performance accelerator.

Don’t waste the most important months of the year. Summer is when future aces are built. If you’re serious about standing out this fall, the work starts now.

Let’s get to work. Tap into your summer gains at uratbb.com.

The ArmCare Edge: Why Testing Beats Guessing

The ArmCare Edge: Why Testing Beats Guessing

In today’s game, every pitcher wants to throw harder, stay healthier, and perform consistently — but too many are relying on outdated methods to get there. Pitch counts and total throws alone don’t tell the full story. Smart pre- and post-throw testing with ArmCare.com changes that. At URATBB, we use it to individualize every athlete’s workload and build stronger, more resilient arms — and the results speak for themselves.

Why Testing Beats Guessing

Throwing is stressful. Every arm reacts differently to volume, velocity, and recovery time. That’s why pitch counts and throw totals, while helpful, only scratch the surface. ArmCare testing gives us real-time data on arm strength, fatigue, and recovery. We test before the throw — and after. That consistency gives us a true picture of how an athlete is responding to their workload, and how we can adjust to keep them healthy and improving.

Pre-throw testing ensures the arm is ready for the day’s load. Post-throw testing shows how well it handled that load. Over time, this builds a much more accurate understanding of a player’s capacity — something no pitch count can tell you. This data is what separates sustainable development from injury risk.

Smarter Workload Management

By consistently tracking how the arm performs before and after throwing, we can fine-tune volume, intensity, and rest days to match the athlete’s unique needs. Instead of sticking to a one-size-fits-all program or limiting athletes based on guesswork, we scale intelligently. That’s how we increase velocity, reduce soreness, and extend careers.

We don’t rely on feel — we rely on feedback. The numbers tell us whether an athlete needs more volume, less intensity, or targeted strength work. That leads to better long-term development and fewer setbacks.

Fixing What’s Holding You Back

One of the most valuable features of the ArmCare app is the custom training it delivers based on each athlete’s unique imbalances and weaknesses. If your external rotation is weak or your shoulder endurance is lagging, the app delivers exercises designed to fix it — automatically and immediately.

This personalized approach eliminates guesswork. No cookie-cutter rehab plans. No guessing if a shoulder is “strong enough.” Just real-time insight and corrective action that builds stronger arms, faster.

Real Results from Our Program

We’ve seen incredible gains from athletes like Trevor Horne, who used consistent testing to support a 10+ MPH velocity jump while maintaining shoulder health. Brody used his testing to guide daily training, resulting in better command, smoother mechanics, and faster recovery.

And Jack Owen? His daily buy-in to the testing and training loop has allowed him to build strength with precision and avoid overuse setbacks — a massive edge in today’s game.

Another standout is Kylan, who began as one of the slower arms on his team. Through disciplined training paired with daily ArmCare testing, he quickly climbed the velocity ranks — reaching over 3 standard deviations above the average for his age group. He now dominates hitters everywhere he goes, with a confident, durable arm built on real data and daily consistency. Kylan’s rise is a clear example of how smart testing turns potential into performance.

The future of arm care isn’t about counting pitches — it’s about measuring readiness and recovery. Pre- and post-throw testing gives us the tools to train smarter, protect arms, and unlock peak performance.

If you’re still guessing, you’re falling behind. The data is here — and it’s changing the game.

Success Wears Work Boots

Success Wears Work Boots

Success doesn’t show up in flashy gear or overnight hype — it walks in every day wearing work boots. In an era where instant results dominate the headlines, it’s easy to forget that the most meaningful progress comes from showing up, putting in the work, and grinding it out. Real development takes consistency, effort, and patience — not shortcuts. This blog is your reminder that success isn’t gifted; it’s earned — and it wears work boots.

What Work Boots Represent

Work boots are the symbol of those who show up daily, regardless of weather, fatigue, or recognition. They represent grit over glamour, discipline over distraction.

You won’t find success sitting in a brand-new pair of cleats or wrapped in designer warmups. You’ll find it in the hours spent in the weight room before school, in the throwing drills repeated until muscle memory takes over, and in the quiet recovery work when no one’s watching. Work boots don’t chase clout — they chase excellence. And they never take shortcuts.  The dirtier the cleats, (usually) the better the player.

Real Examples from the Program

At URATBB, we’ve seen firsthand how this mindset pays off. Take Trevor Horne — a 14U pitcher who committed to the process. Over the span of a year, he added more than 50 pounds of arm strength and gained 10 MPH in velocity. No gimmicks. Just structure, intent, and daily commitment.

Or look at Brody, a pitcher who’s still climbing and just scratching the surface. Through targeted drills, daily ArmCare testing, and an unrelenting focus on refining his delivery, his transformation continues to unfold. Progress like this doesn’t come from luck. It comes from showing up and getting to work — every single day.

Another powerful example is Jack Owen. Jack’s journey shows what’s possible when you match effort with consistency. Through a full year of structured training, Jack made major strides in his command, velocity, and overall athleticism. His buy-in to the daily grind — even on the tough days — is exactly why he's now seeing consistent results. Jack didn’t take shortcuts. He leaned into the process, showed up in his work boots, and earned every bit of his development.

What This Means for Players (and Parents)

For parents: success isn’t just about the next tournament or the next showcase. It’s about buying into a long-term process that prioritizes development over quick results.

For players: if your goals wear sneakers, they’ll leave when it gets hard. But if they wear work boots, they’ll stay and grind. Mastering mechanics, building arm strength, increasing velocity, and staying healthy — all of it requires showing up with the mindset to work, improve, and endure.

This is the difference between players who burn out and those who build something real.

Success isn’t promised — it’s earned. And the players who wear work boots are the ones who earn it. No gimmicks. No shortcuts. Just real work, real growth, and real results.

If you or your athlete is ready to lace up and build something that lasts, we’re here to guide the way.

✈️ Idaho Pitching Clinic Recap: Development, Nostalgia, and Building Future Arms

✈️ Idaho Pitching Clinic Recap: Development, Nostalgia, and Building Future Arms

This past weekend I had the opportunity to run a pitching development clinic in Burley, Idaho for players ages 11–14 — and the experience was both productive and personal.

I flew into Twin Falls, which instantly brought back memories. As a freshman, I spent a season pitching at the College of Southern Idaho — and the return to this area reminded me how much of my own foundation started right here. Driving through the Idaho scenery on my way to Burley gave me time to reflect on how far the journey has come — and how much I enjoy helping the next generation take their first steps.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Clinic Breakdown: 2 Days of Focused Player Development

Day 1: Foundation First

We started with a 2-hour session focused entirely on the basics that matter — stability, mobility, and building a warm-up routine that actually prepares the body to throw.

  • Pitching-specific activation and mobility work

  • Focus on shoulder stability and hip control

  • Individualized adjustments to basic throwing mechanics

  • Drill work aimed at helping each athlete begin to find repeatability and rhythm in their delivery

Day 1 was about understanding how to prepare and how to move — not just how to throw.

Day 2: Deeper Work and Data-Driven Adjustments

The second day was 4 hours long, and we used every minute to dig into individual needs.

  • Athletes went through ArmCare strength and balance testing

  • We identified weak links in the arm, shoulder, or movement patterns

  • Each player received custom drill plans to work on the areas that would give them the biggest return

  • Throwing sessions were focused on building rhythm, timing, and mechanical efficiency for each individual

At the end of the day, every player left with access to a custom training program through the ArmCare app, so they can continue developing with real structure — not guesswork.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Why This Matters

At ages 11–14, habits are forming — good or bad. Clinics like this give young players the tools to:

  • Warm up with purpose

  • Move more efficiently

  • Train smart, not just hard

  • Build long-term strength, mobility, and throwing confidence

And with objective ArmCare data behind the training, they now know where to focus — not just what feels hard.

๐Ÿงข Looking Ahead

Huge thanks to the Burley community for the great turnout and enthusiasm. I’m excited to keep building these events and watching players take control of their development.

If you're a parent, coach, or program director interested in bringing this type of clinic to your city — reach out. We’re just getting started.
